Issue No. 111

April 1957

The Menace of the Machines: A disgruntled special effects wizard uses the tiny machines he built for the movies to commit crimes. His secret weapons are small, robot duplicates of the Blackhawks. The team overcomes their pint-sized doubles by using their own uniforms as decoys to distract the FX villain while they track him down to his hideout.

The Perils of Blackie, the Wonder Bird: Blackie is carrying a vital message from an agent on a ship about a smuggling ring. The smugglers learn of the message and try to stop Blackie with everything from attacking eagles to guns fired from planes. The Blackhawks discover the smugglers are using a fake dead whale to move their stolen goods. Meanwhile, Blackie out flies and out smarts the smugglers and delivers his message in time to save the agent's life.

Trigger Craig's Magic Carpet: Trigger Craig gets out of prison and sends his henchmen to buy an item at an auction. He's expecting a desk in which he hid money, but instead they come back with a ratty Persian Carpet. As the cover already gave away, it is a magic flying carpet, which Craig immediately puts to use in committing outlandish crimes. When the Blackhawks interfer, he mounts a bullet proof dome and machineguns on the carpet and goes after them. Blackhawk jumps from his plane onto the carpet, but can't stop it. Blackie rescues the team again by grabbing a thread in the carpet and unraveling it. I liked the way the carpet was defeated, but otherwise this was a pretty silly story. And Blackie should have been given his own comic book by this time.
