Issue No. 184

May 1963

The Bizarre Split-man: A freak accident turns a scientist into a man who is blazing hot on one side of his body and freezing cold on the other. He claims the change happens periodically and he can't remember the crimes he commits while in the changed state, but that's a lie so that the Blackhawks won't discover that it wasn't an accident, but a purposely induced transformation.

Blackhawk's Secret Furlough: Blackhawk takes an incognito vacation and swears he won't think about crime fighting till he gets back. But he can't help himself and even dreams about the team in danger and when a real threat appears, he takes action as if he were in uniform.

The Island of Super-Monkeys: On a remote South Pacific Island, the Blackhawks and islanders barely overcome a tribe of monkeys who have been turned super intelligent by radiation from a strange meteorite. The story uses the monkeys cleverly and makes them both sympathetic and threatening without ever giving them any dialogue. This is another issue where the backup stories are better and more original than the cover story.
