"Alright," Blackhawk said, "let's see what these planes can do." He didn't have to say any more. The Blackhawks were the finest combat pilots in the world. As one, the sleek P-80s dove to meet the German fighters. The FW 190D-12 was one of the best piston-engine fighter planes ever built and the Germans' new pilot training programs turned out top-notch flyers, but they were no match for the Black Knights. The Shooting Stars lived up to their name, streaking through the German formation like meteors at nearly six hundred miles per hour. Six .50 caliber machine guns in the nose of each of the seven Blackhawk aircraft blazed, chewing up the German formation. Three FW 190s exploded in fireballs of burning fuel and ammunition. Four others fell out of the sky, spinning uncontrollably toward the distant ground below, trailing smoke and flames. The German formation disintegrated as planes scrambled to get away from the locus of destruction.
